The smiling boy in this photo grew up to be one of America’s most evil men

Born in El Paso in 1960, Richard Ramirez terrorized California through murders and assaults in 1984 and 1985. Accounts of his childhood describe abuse and exposure to extreme violence, but that history does not excuse the choices that devastated so many lives. His victims were attacked in places where they should have felt secure. The lasting consequences belonged to survivors, grieving relatives, and communities forced to confront fear inside their own homes.

The investigation advanced after teenager James Romero III recorded details of a suspicious car. A fingerprint helped identify Ramirez, while his December 1984 car-theft mug shot helped make him recognizable. Residents captured him in Los Angeles on August 31, 1985. Convicted in 1989 of 13 murders, alongside sexual assaults and burglaries, he received a death sentence. He died in prison in 2013 from complications of lymphoma. Beyond the notorious nickname, those he harmed deserve remembrance—not merely a footnote.
